Style Icon: Miroslava Duma

Daughter of a Russian senator, Miroslava Duma is a style icon not only in her home of Russia, but internationally as well. She was the previously the editor for Harper's Bazaar (Russia) and now is a freelance writer for numerous publications such as OK Magazine (Russia), Tatler and Glamour (Russia). She has the most amazing style- I'd love to go through her dress closet!

At Home with Minnie Mortimer

I'm loving these images of Minnie Mortimer's Malibu home that were featured on Vogue.com. I've been compiling pieces of art, bright, old Vivaldi album covers that look very Lilly Pulitzer, and paintings over the past couple of years in hopes that they will eventually turn into the gallery wall I wish them to be. I love the idea of mixing artwork with found objects, similar to how Andy Spade did in his Hampton's home.

Here's what to love about her space:

- art and books are the focal points of the house, only second to the Malibu location
- oversized windows in the sun room and behind the day bed
- plank oak floors reminiscent of boot flooring bring the outside in
- the gallery wall
- framed photography from the 'Locals Only' skateboarding book in the foyer
- her traditional library/dining room with modern chairs reminiscent of The Miller House
- the seashell chandelier hanging over the coffee tables, again, bring the outside in
- the idea of hanging your favorite dress 'on display' in your closet

Fashion Magazine Art

Found on one of my favorite art sites, 20×200, this painting by Lauren DiCioccio is best described by herself:

“Fashion magazines are the source materials for my series color codification dot drawings. I make each piece on a sheet of frosted mylar laid over a magazine page. After assigning a color to every letter in the alphabet (numbers are in grayscale, 0=white and 9=black), I apply tiny dots of paint over every character on the page. Each drawing I make has a different color codification, and therefore a different palette. The resulting painting is a legible blur of dots in the form of the article’s layout — like a system of Braille for the color inclined.”

The September Issue

I was lucky enough to see a prescreening of The September Issue today, the documentary coming out 28 August 2009 about Anna Wintour and Vogue magazine.

The documentary gives an inside look into the development of the September 2007 issue of Vogue- the issue that weighed nearly five pounds and was the single largest magazine issue ever published. The film, directed by R.J. Cutler, gives a glimpse into the legendary Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour and her passionate team of editor’s work.

The September Issue definitely sheds some light on the enigmatic Wintour. As she is quite demanding of her team, the dynamic between her and Grace Coddington (Vogue’s Creative Director) is what really makes the film, well, funny.

Coddington began her fashion career as a model, went on to work for British Vogue and has been at American Vogue for twenty years. As the very deliberate, dry and absolutely hilarious counterpart to Wintour, she actually comes across as the more inspired of the two. The differences between the two women are nearly inconsequential, as Wintour describes Coddington as “remarkable” and “genius”, acknowledging that nobody else can do what she does.
