At Home with Sam Shipley & Jeff Halmos

Updates from The Selby are one of my most favorite things. Taking a look into how people live is truly a glimpse into their souls, don't you think? It's always fun to look through all of their featured people, but when you know them, it's even better. Sam Shipley and Jeff Halmos (of Shipley & Halmos) are clothing designers based in New York that I have a style crush on (their line can also be found at Barneys). There's something about this apartment- maybe it's the loft- that is quintessential New York living.

The Coveteur: Erica Domesek

"It's more interesting to have just a picture of a small detail - then you can dream all the rest around it. Because when you see the whole thing, what is there to imagine?"

This is the motto of the amazing website The Coveteur. The site, similar to The Selby, features beautifully styled portraits, homes and found items of trend and style forecasters and tastemakers. Today, they featured the founder of P.S. - I Made This, Erica Domesek, a do-it-yourself blog that has some pretty rad ideas for fashion and just cool things to make, based in New York City.

She's a multi-colored Sharpie aficiando (aren't we all) and a recent "graduate" of Teen Vogue. She let Coveteur peek inside her organized in-home design center. (Do you see that closet below? I DIE.

Organization and craft supplies overload. This is my heaven.)

The King and Queen of Spades

The Selby recently posted images of Kate and Andy Spade's home in Manhattan- and it's perfection. Not surprisingly, they have every detail down. Here's what to love:

* the herringbone wood floors

* the black gloss rotary phone

* black + white abstract art contrasted with..

* punches of primary colors in the walls and chairs

* the white subway tiles in the kitchen

* coffee table books galore

It's a great mix of preppy/chic. If I wasn't in a rental I'd paint my doors black lacquer like that! Bonus: watch this video on Spade and Sperduti here- creators of the J.Crew Liquor Store concept. I'm so luckily to have met and worked with them while I was working on the Rolex brand in New York!

A Selby Film: Mitch Alfus, Leather King

The Selby

I absolutely love when photographer Todd Selby posts new interiors on his site. The newest addition to his collection includes Lindsay and Fitzhugh- jewelry and furniture designers, respectively- based in Park Slope, Brooklyn, New York.

Perhaps I'm biased, but I feel that the look of a clean, blank slate embellished with neutral accents is the way to go. To me, a completely relaxing environment that can be mixed and matched with found objects from anywhere and everywhere allows for a fluid, transient space that is never tiring.

As a previous Brooklynite myself, I lived in the neighbouring area of Cobble Hill and am quite familiar with the beautiful brownstones that quietly decorate the streets. One of my favourite aspects of his site is the handwritten interviews that bring the photographer and his subjects alike to life. In this posting, the couple mentions Frankies 457 on Court Street as one of their regular spots- it was one of my faves, too! Explore more images and read the interview here.

Leaving His Mark

The Upper East Side’s newly renovated The Mark Hotel reopened its exquisitely detailed doors this past spring with the help of world-renowned designer Jacques Grange. As the designer to clients like Yves Saint Laurent and Aerin Lauder, Grange takes a step away from his traditional French design and adds a touch of playfulness to the copper-topped building that once held private residences.

The Mark has an upscale and understated tone with a touch of humour. Grange’s personal philosophy of balancing the elements of grandeur, intimacy, colour and art are realised in this Manhattan landmark.

In an effort to bring downtown uptown, Grange collaborated with Ron Arad and Vladimir Kagan for furniture design and even asked his friend Karl Lagerfeld to donate his photography to hang on the walls. ‘‘I adore Karl and would love to work on one of his spaces, but he does everything himself,’’ says Grange, whose drink of choice at Bar Mark is a caipirinha.

Grange’s meticulous detail shines through everything- down to the lobby elevators, the black and white striped marble floors, the tailored Boffi kitchens and the handpicked fabrics and linens. Many of the rooms have terraces that either overlook Madison Avenue, the courtyard, or 77th Street. The French-American Mark’s Restaurant has both a Master Sommelier and a Tea Master. There are 118 rooms on 15 floors, not including the private residences upstairs.

Todd Selby

Todd Selby has created an amazing website that features photographs, paintings and videos of interesting people and their creative spaces. The best part is the handwritten interviews he posts along with their interiors.

Shown above is Nicolas Malleville and Francesca Bonato’s home in Mexico. It has such a great minimal appeal with some really nice accent pieces, like the gold chandelier in the living room and the hats! Check out the site here.
