A New Way of Life

Ohm, a new residential tower on 30th Street and 11th Avenue here in Manhattan, is the latest luxury outpost in the real-estate frontier that combines live music and high-end real estate. Architect Stephen B. Jacobs, designer of the Gansevoort Hotels in New York and Miami Beach, has this new apartment building looking and acting like a boutique hotel by holding concerts for tenants in the atrium and penthouse. With so many renters in this fine city, this could definitely be a new way of life. Read the full New York Times article here.

A Quick Read

I finished this book in nearly a couple of hours after my friend Marisa lent me her copy. More of a "beach" book than anything else, Love the One You're With by Emily Giffin is amusing and recommended for a good beach, or in my case, rainy day!

*note: during high school summers I would flag these "beach" books in book shops by their pink covers and embossed lettering in the fiction corner, which clued to me that they were in no way intellectually stimulating.

Quilted Beach Blanket

I couldn't be more excited for the upcoming warm weather, but this past weekend (and first day of Spring) was such a tease! The rain is now back here in Manhattan, but the idea of those amazingly hot and sunny Saturdays spent at the Boat Basin, Frying Pan and Central Park are still top of mind. These quilted beach blankets by Cool Change are the perfect accompaniment for those picnics in the park. Shop at Calypso here!

More is More

Decorating on a budget and making the most of small spaces is what most of us New Yorkers have to do. 25-year old Zach Motl of Robert Couturier & Associates, may just be the king of bringing these two things together. As a former intern at Miles Redd, Motl currently rents the above 178 square-foot studio for a mear $944/month in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn (next to where I used to live in Cobble Hill!). Over the past three years, he has cashed in on the small space he calls his own, making each and every square foot count.

What I love about this room:
*Light grey wall paint with white crown molding
*That green and white couch!
*Stacked bookshelves above the bed
*Black lacquer door
*Black wood floors
*Navy blue and white bathroom (and that white Orchid)
*The old-school map (reminds me of one I bought of South America on the street in the West Village a couple of summer's ago)
*How it's reminiscent of Maximilian Sinsteden’s dorm room (see my past post
here)

Bamboo Flatware

I love bamboo-inspired flatware. About a year ago, I purchased a nicely-priced set from Bed Bath & Beyond (shown left), but after reading yesterday's New York Times interactive article, "Shopping with Charlotte Moss", I've fallen in love all over again! This wooden set (shown right) is by William Wayne & Company, and can be purchased here.

Heidi Merrick Collection

Heidi Merrick has her new Spring collection out and has me swooning. Her pieces are really basic, but have twist of modern updates for that perfect, "where did you get that?!" effect. I think I might have to invest in more than a couple of these... Shop here!

Calypso Cravings

I love my black Foley & Corrina "mid-city" tote, but I need new, fresh options for the spring and summer by Calypso. I love these light brown leather options (the one on the bottom is my fave)! I'd also love to wear this gold accent top... Oh to dream... Shop here!

My Birthday Weekend!

Jason and I are heading to Washington, D.C. today because March 6 is my birthday! I love D.C. and thought it would be perfect for my birthday weekend. I'm looking forward to shopping in Georgetown, drinks on the waterfront, checking out the Phillips Collection, walking around the Eastern Market for some artisan goods and catching up with amazing friends.

For our train ride down, I've packed bottles of Sancerre and Sauvignon Blanc, along with some delicious Trader Joe's snacks. The weather is supposed to be amazing and I'll be with people I love. What could be better? I'll report back next week. Bon weekend!

"I wanted so badly to lie down next to her on the couch and wrap my arms around her and sleep. Just sleep together, in the most innocent sense of the phrase. But I lacked the courage and she had a boyfriend and I was gawky and she was gorgeous and I was hopelessly boring and she was endlessly fascinating. So I walked back to my room and collapsed on the bottom bunk- thinking that if people were rain, I was drizzle and she was a hurricane." -John Green, Looking for Alaska

2010 Whitney Museum Biennial

Pae White, Smoke Knows, 2009

This year marks the seventy-fifth edition of the Whitney’s signature exhibition. While Biennials are always affected by the cultural, political, and social moment, this exhibition “simply titled 2010” embodies a cross section of contemporary art production rather than a specific theme. Now through May 30, 2010. Read more here.

At Home in Stockholm

This white, open space with that perfect window seat has one of the most gorgeous views I've ever seen. I also LOVE the white canvas couches, black furniture, gold accents and the contrast of the deep burgundry Moroccan-style rug. I have the same look in my bedroom right now. I want to live here. Found here.

Film: "The Art of the Steal"

"An un-missable look at one of the art worlds most fascinating controversies and a celebrated selection of the Toronto, New York and AFI Film Festivals, Don Argotts gripping documentary "The Art of the Steal" chronicles the long and dramatic struggle for control of the Barnes Foundation, a private collection of art valued at more than $25 billion." I want to see this- watch the trailer here.

Designing Minds: Tibi

Adobe has come out with an online channel that streams videos on the design world's top creative minds. I was referring back to my post on Andy Spade from this past summer this morning and checked out the rest of the channel's episodes. I was so excited to find one on Tibi's designer, Amy Smilovic, who just happens to have one of my absolute favourite lines. I would wear anything and everything of hers if I could! Watch the video on her success, below.
